Jockey Club Support Centre for Disabled Families

The Jockey Club Support Centre for Disabled Families was established in 2020. The purpose of setting up the Centre is to provide a gathering point for disabled families, so that they can meet more new friends here, which will encourage them to step out of the community and also help to increase the sense of belonging of families to the organization. The Centre also has an assistive technology resource hall, providing facilities such as laptops, braille display, amplifiers, scanners with optical character recognition, so that disabled people can enjoy the fun brought by technology here and grasp the latest information in society.

The Hong Kong Network for the Promotion of Inclusive Society encourages people with disabilities to master technology and break through the established mindset of "passive support," enabling them to establish an accessible learning, working, and living environment, thereby expanding opportunities in society and improving their quality of life. This is an important step towards "inclusion."

Assistive technology designed for the visually impaired can help them obtain equal access to information, allowing them to freely enhance their knowledge in their favorite areas, improve their understanding and appreciation of the world, and make them more willing to step out into the community and expand their social circles. Our organization will establish an "Assistive Technology Resource Center" to enable the visually impaired to learn about accessible technology, read books, absorb the latest information, learn how to use online platforms for shopping, and use government electronic services and online payment services, etc. Assistive technology can give the visually impaired choices, enhance their ability to live independently, and integrate into the digital age. When visually impaired members learn how to use assistive technology, they can become ambassadors, encouraging more visually impaired individuals to use technology to improve their quality of life and become more willing to explore new things.

Early education services for the visually impaired in Hong Kong were not ideal, and many visually impaired individuals only received education up to the third year of secondary school, while many hearing-impaired individuals could only receive basic education. We hope that through the use of technology, their ability to learn new knowledge can be quickly improved, and they can keep up with the knowledge-based society. We also hope to organize adult courses for visually and hearing-impaired individuals in the future, allowing them to learn practical courses in Chinese and English, information and communication technology (ICT), etc., help them enter the job market, and comprehensively improve their knowledge and economic ability, enabling them to obtain more equal treatment and opportunities.
